26th January 2012 - Land's End to John O'Groats in Six Days!

Forget Me Not Childrens Hospice
On Monday 28th May a small team will be embarking on an epic bike ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats all in aid of The Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice.

The team are aiming to complete this incredible 900 mile adventure in just six days which means pedalling an average of 150 miles every day!  This would be an incredible challenge on level terrain, however the route takes in some 10,000 metres of climbs.

The brave cyclists taking on this challenge include organiser James Sutherland, Managing Director of Dortech.  “Having thought up this project I have somehow managed to get the rest of the team to join me in what will be a gruelling ride. It will be tough, but if it was easy it wouldn’t be a challenge and we hope to raise a significant amount for a cause we are all truly passionate about. I am lucky to have my own happy and healthy family, so giving something back to support children with life threatening conditions is really important.”

Other members of the team include; Andy Bell from Wates Construction, Mark Zimny a Technical Designer also from Dortech and Craig Turner from Senior Architectural Systems.

The Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice exists to give vital support to children with a life limiting or life threatening condition, and their families across Kirklees, Calderdale and Wakefield. The charity touches the lives of over 300 children and their families each year. The team are aiming to raise over £10,000 which will provide five specialist cot units or approximately 500 hours of care. 8th December 2011 - Dortech Works With Balfour Beatty to Implement Princes Trust Programme

Princes Trust
The UK has a major problem; Official figures show almost 1.2 million people aged 16 to 24 are classed as “NEET” – not in education, employment or training – as school-leavers continue to bear the brunt of job shortages in the downturn.

The number of youngsters with effectively nothing to do in England soared by 137,000 – more than 12 per cent – in the third quarter of 2011 compared with the same period a year earlier.

Dortech are delighted to be working with Balfour Beatty in the implementation of their Princes Trust programme which intends to counter this problem.

Will Hopka is the latest young person to be invited to work with Dortech on Balfour Beattys Noel Baker site under the direct supervision of Dortechs Site Manager, Simon Burgan.

Simon was pleased to be involved stating; “It’s really difficult for young people to find employment these days and i’m glad that we can do our bit. The Princes Trust programme is great in that it creates awareness of modern day construction and building techniques. In particular engineering, system interfaces and phasing of work. I think that the Princes Trust provides a great opportunity for young people to learn about what we do.”

Dortech are now in the process of implementing an Apprenticeship programme with the first apprentice due to start work before Christmas.

The Clipper race has fulfilled all of my expectations and then some. The raging seas, the silent seas and the windiest wind I've ever encountered. I never thought three years ago that I would be saying 'I've just sailed across the Atlantic Ocean twice in an ocean sailing race', it's amazing. It was an emotional time having to leave the boat in Cape Town, given that we had become an eighteen strong 'Welcome to Yorkshire' family. Yet the experience and adventure that I have had will remain with me for a lifetime and will never ever be forgotten.

The design pushed the glazing systems limits by incorporating concealed/non-visible automatic, window actuation devices which open automatically to increase natural ventilation if the school overheats. In addition, the rooflight system has been constructed to incorporate facets and triangular shaped glass modules.

Against the backdrop of the iconic landmark of Corcovado, topped by the imposing, floodlit statue of Christ the Redeemer, 24-year-old paralegal from Leeds, Leonie Sutherland, said, “Arriving in Rio was absolutely fantastic, I can’t believe we’ve done it. Actually I can believe we’ve done it; we’ve got an excellent crew, we’ve bonded magnificently. I couldn’t have asked for a better crew, we’ve had no fall outs, lots of smiles, lots of hard work. 3rd August 2011 - Leonie Sutherland Sets Sail in Round the World Race for Team Yorkshire

Clipper Race
Today brings with it the onset of true offshore racing with eight of the teams clearing Ushant overnight and heading out into open ocean for the first time on this race. New York and Visit Finland are still battling it out in front but joining them, having gained ground over the past 24 hours, is Gold Coast Australia as the team works hard to regain the leading position they established at the start of the race.

Trying to keep pace with the east coast Australian entry is Welcome to Yorkshire who, like Gold Coast Australia, made the decision to gybe south in search of stronger winds and a better wind angle to compensate for the tide.

"The race between Alderney and Ushant yesterday proved to be tactically interesting," says the Yorkshire entry's skipper, Rupert Dean. "All yachts were flying spinnakers, some sailing the direct route, with Gold Coast Australia and ourselves gybing south. Our strategy worked quite well and we made some miles up whilst charging along in flat water and doing our first peel of the campaign, from light to heavyweight kite. "Fortunately we were able to take the last of the favourable tide around Ushant to get into the Bay of Biscay, before the wind backed to the south west."

12th July 2011 - Chairmans Daughter's Round the World Yacht Race About to Begin!

Round the world clipper race
Dortechs Chairman's daughter is about to participate in a challenging round the worls clipper race in aid of The Teenage Cancer Trust. So far, Leonie has managed to raise an impressive £7,310 for this fantastic cause.

The race starts on 31st July, setting off from Southampton, racing to Madeira, to replenish stores before heading off across the Atlantic to Rio de Janeiro. The race then continues, back across the Atlantic to Cape Town in South Africa, where Leonie will leave the boat in one piece and return back to the UK tor resume her career in Law. This is quite a challenge, during the last race, one person was washed overboard (in the middle of the night) mid Atlantic (they were successfully rescued), one boat sank (all crew rescued), one turned turtle and was de-masted, and one skipper broke his leg in rough weather and had to be air lifted off the boat. So we expect it will not be an easy passage!

Leonie is crewing on the racing yacht sponsored by ‘Welcome to Yorkshire’, the only English sponsored boat in the race, so there is quite a bit a stake!

If you would like to receieve up to date information about the race you can follow the build up to the race and the race itself by logging on to the web site www.clipperroundtheworld.com, or visit Leonie's webpage http://leoniesutherland.weebly.com/index.html.

4th April 2011 - Dortech Launches a Maintenance Division

Dortech Maintenance Launch
Dortech Architectural Systems Ltd has just launched Dortech Maintenance, a division set-up to offer the company’s expertise in providing refurbishment and maintenance services to the market.  Dortechs Maintenance services can offer; planned, reactive and refurbishment services for a variety of different window and doors products.

Dortech Maintenances Services Manager, Steve Sutherland says:
“This exciting new business venture was set-up in acknowledgement of the importance of maintaining a buildings envelope. A building’s envelope is the barrier that ideally retains heat energy in winter (or keeps it out in summer). In poorly functioning envelopes, heating/cooling energy will be lost to the atmosphere at a higher rate than the loss from efficient envelopes. Over time, if a building’s envelope is not maintained, significant reductions in its performance will be observed.

Additionally, the cost of energy is going through the roof due to rising levels of demand, reliance upon fuel supplied from overseas, planned decommissioning of coal fired power stations over the next few years and nuclear replacements which are not due to be online until 2016.

The UK has been targeted with reducing its Carbon Emissions by at least 80% from 1990 levels by 2050. Maintaining and improving a building envelope therefore represents an increasingly important way of helping us get there.”

Dortech Maintenance differentiates itself from its competition through having a strong foundation and a proven track record in the commercial glazing industry. Unlike many of its competitors, it has a manufacturing background which has given it a thorough knowledge of glazing systems, their components and the most effective methods of fixing problems.
